Bobby Caldwell was raised in Miami, Florida, despite being born in Manhattan. Bob Marley, a reggae singer, was one of his mother’s customers when she was a real estate agent, and the two men grew close.

Caldwell was introduced to a wide range of music while growing up in Miami, including R&B, reggae, Latin, and Haitian. He was raised on the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.

Caldwell began playing the piano and guitar when he was 12 years old. Rock and roll, jazz, and rhythm and blues were his musical loves.

At age 17, he performed in Las Vegas with his ensemble before relocating to Los Angeles. He played in the Miami band Katmandu, which performed both conventional standards and a lot of original music. Caldwell sang and performed a variety of instruments.

Early in the 1970s, Caldwell’s first big opportunity came as Little Richard’s rhythm guitarist. Caldwell ultimately disbanded his band and started a solo career.

By the time he moved to Los Angeles in 1960, he had spent six years performing in various bar ensembles and pursuing record deals. In the end, Caldwell secured a record deal with TK Records in Miami in 1978.

Caldwell died on March 14, 2023. For the past five years, he was unable to walk because of neuropathy and a ruptured tendon in his ankle.
