Christian Atsu’s childhood club Cheetah FC CEO Hayye Yartey described how the late player donated his first paycheck to a local church.

He claimed that Atsu expressed his generosity to them after becoming interested in a chapel that was situated behind the club’s training grounds.
Atsu instantly gave his first paycheck of €800 to the church after signing his first contract with FC Porto, according to Yartey.

“He was a Christian. Very devoted to his religion, and his Bible. There is a church just behind us where he always wanted to pull his fellow players,” the Cheetah FC CEO told TV3.

“I remember when Christian went to Porto and succeeded in the trials, Porto went on to pay him 800 euros a month. So I received 800 euros [the same amount as his salary] through Western Union from Christian.

“I was so happy thinking he had sent me money but his call followed up and he said the 800 euros he had sent was equivalent to x amount of Ghana cedis which he ordered me to give to the church.”

Atsu was found dead in the wreckage following the earthquake in Turkey on Saturday, and his death was officially declared.
Many people have sent their sympathies to the football player’s family and loved ones as tributes have poured in from near and far.
On Sunday evening, Atsu’s mortal remains arrived in Ghana. To greet the body, a brief ceremony was staged in the VIP area of the Kotoka International Airport.
