Joseph Anthony Pepitone was born on October 9, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a working-class family. His father worked in construction, while his mother was employed in a factory. As a child, Pepitone displayed a keen interest in baseball and participated in local leagues.

Pepitone’s baseball career took off when he was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1958. He made his Major League debut in 1962 and spent ten seasons with the Yankees. During his time with the team, Pepitone earned three Gold Glove Awards and was named to three All-Star teams. He also helped the Yankees win two American League pennants and two World Series championships.

Following his stint with the Yankees, Pepitone played for other teams, including the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, and Atlanta Braves. However, his production declined, and he eventually retired from baseball in 1973 with a career batting average of .258, 219 home runs, and 707 RBIs.

Throughout his career, Pepitone’s exceptional fielding earned him three Gold Glove Awards. He was also a key player in the Yankees’ championship teams of 1962 and 1963 and was inducted into the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

Sadly, Joe Pepitone passed away on March 13, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 82. His contributions to baseball and his colourful personality will be remembered by fans and fellow players alike.
