Therese Coffey is a British politician serving as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since October 2022.

Coffey, the daughter of T. G. Coffey and Alice George, was born in St. Helens, Merseyside, on November 18, 1971, and raised in Liverpool.
She received her education at Saint Mary’s College in Crosby and St Edward’s College in Liverpool before enrolling at Somerville College in Oxford to study chemistry in 1989.

She was forced to leave the college in 1991 due to poor exam results that were attributed to her excessive participation in extracurricular activities.
Coffey then attended University College London, where she graduated with a BSc in chemistry in 1993 (with upper second class honors) and a Doctorate in chemistry in 1998.
Following graduation, Coffey worked for Mars Incorporated in a variety of capacities, including that of financial director for Mars Drinks UK.
She then worked for the BBC as a finance manager in the Property division.

Coffey ran for election to the European Parliament on behalf of South East England in the June 2004 elections. Despite being seventh on the list under this proportional representation method, Coffey was not elected as the Conservative Party received 35.2% of the vote and four seats.
Coffey ran as the Conservative Party’s nominee for Wrexham in the general election of 2005. With 6,079 votes, or 20% of the total, she placed third.
Coffey, who was then a resident of Andover, Hampshire, narrowly missed being voted to the European Parliament for South East England in 2009. Her position on the party list was fifth after the Conservative Party received 34.79% of the vote, earning it four seats.
