A military family welcomed Pete Doherty into the world in Hexham, Northumberland. His mother, Jacqueline Michels, was a lance corporal in Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Service, and his father, Peter John Doherty, was a major in the Royal Signals.
His maternal grandpa was Jewish and the son of immigrants Moise Michels and Chana Peress from France and Russia. His paternal grandfather was an Irish immigrant from Cheekpoint in County Waterford. His upbringing was Religious.
He and his sisters, AmyJo and Emily, were raised at various army garrisons throughout mainland Europe and Great Britain. The second of the three kids, Doherty was. Doherty started performing the guitar at age 11 while residing in Dorset, initially in an effort to impress Emily Baker, a female classmate.
At Nicholas Chamberlaine Comprehensive School in Bedworth, North Warwickshire, he earned 11 GCSEs, seven of which were A* grades, and four A-Level distinctions, two of which were grade A. He won a poetry contest when he was 16 years old, and the British Council sent him on a trip to Russia.
He enrolled at Queen Mary, a university of London institution, to study English literature, but dropped out after the first semester. When he graduated from college, Carl Barât, a friend and fellow musician who had been Doherty’s sister’s Brunel University classmate, invited him to relocate into a flat in London.

Doherty revealed his engagement to Katia de Vidas, a bandmate from Puta Madres, on September 28, 2021. The two later got married on September 30, 2021.
