Bill Cosby is an American comedian, actor, and media personality. He made significant contributions to American and African-American culture and gained a reputation as “America’s Dad” for his portrayal of Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show (1984–1992).

Cosby was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 12, 1937. He is one of the four boys of maid Anna Pearl and William Henry Cosby Sr., a former American Navy mess steward. At Philadelphia’s Mary Channing Wister Public School, Cosby served as both the softball and track and field teams’ captains as well as the school’s class president. Teachers noticed that he preferred to have fun rather than work, and he referred to himself as the class clown.

Cosby resumed his participation in sports and performed in plays at FitzSimons Junior High School.

Cosby participated in baseball, football, basketball, and track at Philadelphia’s Central High School, a magnet institution and highly demanding college prep school.

His eleventh grade attempt at Germantown High School was unsuccessful. Cosby joined the Military in 1956 and worked as a hospital corpsman at the National Naval Medical Center in Maryland, the Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, and the Naval Station Argentia in Newfoundland, Canada. He provided physical rehabilitation to members of the Navy and Marine Corps who had been hurt in the Korean War.

He served up until 1960, rising to the rank of third-class petty officer.

In 1961, Cosby was given a track and field scholarship to attend Temple University after obtaining his high school equivalency certificate through correspondence courses.

He ran track and played fullback on the college football squad while also majoring in physical education at Temple.

Cosby started working as a bartender in a Philly nightclub, where he amused the patrons to increase his tip earnings. He then started giving stage performances and dropped out of college to focus on his comedic profession.
