David Dabede Mabuza is a prominent South African politician who held several key positions in the government and the African National Congress (ANC). From February 2018 to February 2023, he served as the Deputy President of South Africa. Before that, he was the Premier of Mpumalanga for nine years during the presidency of Jacob Zuma, and also served as the Deputy President of the ANC from December 2017 to December 2022.

Mabuza’s political journey started during his student years when he was actively involved in the Black Consciousness movement and later joined teacher’s unions. He chaired the South African Democratic Teachers Union, which is affiliated with the Congress of South African Trade Unions. After the end of apartheid, he joined the Mpumalanga provincial legislature as an ANC representative and held several ministerial positions in the Mpumalanga Executive Council. 

Mabuza is known for his populist politics and his efforts to expand the influence of the Mpumalanga branch of the ANC. He was also part of the Premier League, a group that played a key role in the outcome of the ANC’s 54th National Conference, where he was elected as the Deputy President of the ANC under Cyril Ramaphosa, who later appointed him as the Deputy President of South Africa.

Mabuza was born on August 25, 1960, in Phola near Hazyview, Mpumalanga. He obtained a teaching diploma from the Mgwenya College of Education in 1985 and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of South Africa in 1989. During his studies, he held leadership positions in various political organizations and teacher’s unions. Overall, Mabuza’s political career spans several decades and includes various leadership positions within the ANC and the South African government.

David Mabuza illness and health 

According to a source, David Mabuza’s departure from parliament is not due to illness, as he is reportedly in good health. However, in the past, the South African politician has battled with illness for over a month and expressed gratitude for surviving the ailment. It was reported by Sowetanlive that Mabuza became critically ill after being poisoned while on duty, as indicated in medical reports. During an interview, David disclosed that he fell ill after consuming food from unknown sources during his birthday celebration in Bushbuckridge in August, and he let his guard down.

Mabuza, who is the ANC chairman for Mpumalanga, nearly lost his life and was unable to move or stand. It wasn’t until he was transferred to Life Little Company of Mary Hospital in Pretoria that doctors were able to make a diagnosis. Following this, David started receiving treatment from his doctors in Pretoria, which gradually eliminated the toxin from his body. According to reports, the poison still has some effects on his body, and he can’t stand for long periods. Therefore, he continues to receive intensive daily treatment after work to ease the pain. Concerns have been raised about Mabuza’s travel to Russia for treatment, as he claimed to have paid for the treatment himself, and not the South African government.
